Phormium 'Mat's Merlot' has leaves that are dark maroon on top and a smoky green below. Grow in full sun to achieve the most intense colour. The foliage is upright with gracefully arching tips creating an elegant accent to about 3-4 feet tall and wide. New Zealand flax are some of the best plants for adding exclamation points of drama in the garden and containers.
