Polypodium scouleri has thick, leathery, shiny, deep green fronds on this rare native fern.


Description:
Scouler's polypody (Polypodium scouleri) is an unusual BC native fern that grows on rocks and trees on the west coast of Vancouver Island from deep shade to full sun. It has thick, leathery, deep green leaves that get attractive, rusty orange, circular sporangia on the leaf undersides. It grows from thick rhizomes. In the garden it can be grown in containers, in hanging baskets, as an epiphyte on trees, and where soil drainage is reasonable. Rare in cultivation. Tolerant of salt spray.
