Description:
The Columbia tiger lily, Lilium columbianum, is a beautiful BC native lily that resembles turk's cap and martagon lilies. It has slender stems that produce multiple, small, downward-facing flowers with reflexed petals in shades of light orange with dark orange spots. Mature bulbs can produce candelabras of up to 20 blooms. The bulbs are edible. They were eaten by First Nations peoples often as a flavouring for soups, meats, or fish offering a bitter or peppery taste. Pollinated primarily by rufous hummingbirds, it will also be visited by large butterflies and native bees.
