Rhododendron 'Purple Gem' makes for a delightful specimen in the shady garden with a compact, dwarf habit 2-3 feet tall and wide. Evergreen foliage is finely textured, elliptical, aromatic and blue-green taking on bronze tones in winter. Spring brings brilliant clusters of purple-violet, trumpet-shaped flowers. Slow growing. Use in the mixed shrub border, as a specimen, in the foreground of larger flowering shrubs, in courtyards, on patios, and in container plantings. Quite hardy to zone 4.
