Description:
Diospyros virginiana 'Early Golden' is one of the best American persimmons with very sweet, 1.5 inch wide, orange fruit that taste like dates. Partially self-fertile. Plant with a male persimmon for larger crops. The Asian persimmons, D. kaki, are one of the most popular fruits in Asia. Its eastern US relative, D. virginiana, is lesser known but much hardier to zone 4 and produce small 1-2 inch wide, orange to reddish-purple fruit that are eaten fresh when soft like a ripe tomato or used in syrups, jellies, ice creams, and pies.
