Astilbe biternata is the only member of the genus native to North America occurring in the southeastern US. It very much resembles goatsbeard, Aruncus dioicus, forming stately clumps up to six feet tall with coarse, mid green, dissected, fern-like foliage topped with airy, branching, feathery inflorescences of creamy white flowers. Provide rich moist soil in partial shade. Use in the woodland or the mid or back of a shady border.
